Ilya (born in 1933) and Emilia (born in 1945) Kabakov — one of the main representatives of contemporary art. They belong to the older generation of conceptual artists and count among the founders of the Moscow Conceptualist movement. As recounted by the artist, he first made “drawings,” then “series of drawings,” then “albums,” then “paintings,” then “boxes,” then “installations,” which finally led him on to his own invention, the medium of “total installation.” Since 1990, he has been working in collaboration with his wife, Emilia Kabakov. In book traces their artistic development, from the early conceptual works (“white slabs”, 1970s; “kitchen series”, 1970s–1980s, etc.) and first non official exhibitions to first “total installations” (The Man Who Flew into Space from His Apartment, 1985) and utopian projects.
