Vitaly Komar (b. 1943) and Alexander Melamid (b. 1945) — two of the main representatives of contemporary art, founders of the Sots Art, a new movement in the 1970s, and participants of the famous “Bulldozer exhibition”. Komar and Melamid did many things for the first time in the Moscow underground scene: the first performances, installations, and experiments in media art. Showing that art can function not only in the form of material items — paintings or objects — but also exist as a gesture, captured in a photograph or reproduced in the media, Komar and Melamid anticipated contemporary forms of media art.
