Boris Orlov: the Contours of Time

Boris Orlov (born in 1941) is one of the pioneers of contemporary art. He is known, primarily, as a representative of Sots Art; nevertheless his canonical sculptures, which stand out among unofficial Soviet Art due to their visual flamboyance and plastic perfection, are not confined to the Sots Art approach. Rather than mock the triumphant style of the official Soviet art, they detachedly interweave attributes of different epochs into a universal poly-language. Ekaterina Lazareva’s book encompasses different periods of the artist’s work, from the early metaphysical existentialism and the Sots Art works which brought him fame, to the installations which seek to sum up the outcome of the Soviet era and rethink in retrospect the paradoxes of time and Orlov’s own career.
