Viktor Pivovarov (born in 1937) is a unique figure in contemporary Art. Ekaterina Lazareva explores the artist’s life and work from his early years up to recent decades. Pivovarov belongs to the older generation of conceptual artists and is one of the founders of the Moscow Conceptualist School. The specific definition of conceptualism given by Boris Groys in his essay in the art magazine A-YA (1979) is more applicable to his works than to other artists. In the 1970s together with Ilya Kabakov he created a new conceptual genre called “album”, which he continues to work with today. His albums include Conclusion (1975), Microhomo (1979), Kabakov and Pivovarov (1982), The Dramatis Personae (1996), etc. In painting, Pivovarov prefers conceptual series focused on a particular theme. The most important ones are Projects for a Lonely Man (1975), Diary of a Teenager (1986-1988), Eidos (2001–2008) etc.
