Erik Bulatov (born in 1933) is one of the most famous contemporary painters. Sergey Popov for the first time describes the artist’s heritage from his early works to the works of recent decades, produced mainly in France. Already in the 1960s Bulatov had formed an independent position, which made him one of the key figures of unofficial Soviet Art. Being at the origin of such art movements as Sots Art and Photorealism, Bulatov offered an individual, distinct composition in his painting, which has become a landmark for national art. The collision of the poster text snatched out of the context of Soviet reality with the figurative elements (most often landscape, borrowed from mass printing) is a characteristic and distinct feature of Bulatov’s artistic method. As a result the artist managed in an extremely accessible way to show the absurdity of a reality oversaturated with the symbolism of Soviet propaganda.
