Born in Moldova in 1962. Graduated from the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography named after S. A. Gerasimov. Leonid Rotar's active creative and exhibition career began in the 1980s, after graduating from VGIK. He began participating in Russian and international group and solo exhibitions. His works have been exhibited at the Yakut Gallery and the Aidan Gallery. He participated in an exhibition commemorating the 1000th anniversary of the Christianization of Rus' (Moscow, 1988), the International Youth Exhibition (Moscow, 1989), and projects at the Art Moscow and Art Brussels fairs (2008). He was nominated for the Kandinsky Prize in 2008.
