He studied at the agricultural Academy, left his studies in the second year and joined the Soviet Army. After his service, he worked as a locksmith, a driver, and an orderly in a psychiatric hospital. This experience is reflected in his artistic work — since the late 1990s, people with Down syndrome have often acted as Mammadov's actors and models. Graduated from the directing department of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (1985). Film director. Finalist of the Kandinsky Prize (2007).
